March 17th – Saturday   THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO WET & SLIPPERY WEATHER

We plan to hike and work on the soon-to-be re-opened Wolf Gap access trail.  For those of you that have not hiked this spectacular 1 mile access trail – you are in for a treat.  It’s a series of switchbacks down to the Sterling Mine Ditch for one mile crossing large meadows, through oak forests, into beautiful madrone stands and more.  We used some of our Title II grant monies to hire Black Oak Forest Restoration to do much of the desperately needed tread work and heavy-duty chainsaw work as the first step in revitalizing this great trail.  They did a fabulous job.  But more fine tuning of the trimming and tread work is still needed.  You couldn’t ask for a more scenic trail to enjoy while you help us trim!  At the bottom we will take anyone interested on a short detour to see one of the most magnificent double-trunked madrone trees imaginable.  It’s spectacular.

We will meet at our usual 8:30 AM and be back at our cars around 1 PM.  To save some time and driving you can meet us at the Deming Trailhead rather than Buncom.  Since we originally said we would rendezvous at Buncom, someone from SUTA will also be at Buncom (intersection of Sterling Creek and Little Applegate Rds) and then bring you to the Deming trailhead.  The Deming trailhead is on the BLM Armstrong/Deming Gulch road off of Sterling Creek Road – close the 9 mile marker of Sterling Creek Road.  We will tie some bright ribbons or something obvious on the Sterling Mine Ditch sign on Sterling Creek Rd. – which points across to the Armstrong-Deming Road.  Once you get on the Armstrong/Deming Road you will go a short distance and hit a “T” intersection.  Turn left and drive up the gravel road 7/10s of a mile to the Deming trailhead.  Obvious trailhead sign.

If the weather is rainy all week we may revamp our trail trimming plan and work on the Deming North section of the trail so that we don’t all slip and slide down Wolf Gap.  So we’ll simply reverse the next two planned work parties.

Wolf Gap Trail Maintenance @ Deming TrailHead
Apr 1 @ 3:30 pm – 9:00 pm

This gorgeous trail (1 mile long – down and up) offers terrific views, highly varied terrain and no doubt some early wildflowers. For those of you who have not experienced this trail –you are in for a treat. We still need work with loppers, hand saws and tread work tools to bring this access trail back to its full glory – so we would love your help.  Please RSVP to Jim Reiland at 541-899-1091 or rogalla-reiland@q.com   so we plan our April Fools Day snacks (just what will be in those muffins?) and other work party details.

Meet at the Deming Trailhead at 8:30 AM. The Deming Trailhead is off of Sterling Creek Road – near the 9 mile marker. Turn onto the Deming-Armstrong BLM road (a BLM Sterling Mine Ditch Trail sign is opposite the turn-off), drive to “T” intersection, turn left.  Go 7/10s of a mile to the Deming trailhead.

First Annual Yodeling Trail Work Party @ Wolf Gap Trailhead
Jan 17 @ 8:30 am – 1:30 pm
First Annual Yodeling Trail Work Party @ Wolf Gap Trailhead | Jacksonville | Oregon | United States

Come Join Us for The First Annual Yodeling Trail Work Party on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail!

Please join SUTA at the first annual yodeling extravaganza on the scenic Wolf Gap Access Trail on January 17th !  We’ll also be doing some maintenance of this gorgeous access trail while we are at it. You can work off excess holiday calories with the rest of us while having fun.

Our January 17th yodeling work party will focus on the trail section from the top of Wolf Gap down to the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail, doing light trimming and much needed tread work.  We will hike no more than about 3 miles roundtrip, returning to the Wolf Gap Trailhead for lunch.  This sunny, lovely portion of the trail passes across meadows, through some lovely oak and madrone woodlands with great views of the mountains to the south.  We will take a short detour for those who have not seen the enormous double madrone right off the Wolf Gap trail!    And if you are wondering about the yodeling part, someone we met on the trail recently said to us that going down the Wolf Gap trail made him feel as if he were on the movie set for the Sound of Music.  So….yodeling seems appropriate.

When:   January 17th– Saturday   8:30 AM – 1:30 PM (includes lunch provided by SUTA)

Where:   Wolf Gap Trailhead, turn onto the Deming-Armstrong Road off of Sterling Creek Road close to the 9 mile marker – bear left at the “T” and drive about 3 miles up to the trailhead ( going past the Deming Trailhead). For detailed driving directions click here.

What:  Brushing and tread work on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail from Wolf Gap Trailhead down to the Ditch trail.

What to Bring: Wear comfortable hiking or work boots, dress in layers and bring gloves and your yodeling voice.  If you have them, please bring loppers, a pruning saw or a tread tool such as a Pulaski, Grubber, or sturdy shovel.  Bring water and whatever snacks you like.  SUTA supplies additional trail tools and the classic SUTA snacks.

Apr 18 @ 8:30 am – 1:00 pm
CANCELLED: Trail Work Party - April 18, 2020 @ TBD | Oregon | United States

Due to the public health recommendations to avoid public gatherings to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus, we’re reluctantly cancelling this month’s work party.

We regret that the final work party of the year, scheduled for April 18th, is cancelled due to the continuing stay-at-home restrictions that are in place to limit exposure to the Covid-19 virus. We will plan to begin work parties for the Fall/Winter season in November. In the meanwhile, if you do go out on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail and Jack-Ash Trails, please be respectful of others and if you meet other trail users, please step off the trail as much as possible to maintain appropriate distancing.

Thank you all for your support during this season’s work parties, and we hope to see you in the fall.
