February 2025 TRAIL CONDITION UPDATE !!

We’ve finally been able to start surveying the trail conditions on the Sterling Mine Ditch Trail system and Jack-Ash Trail after the recent winter storm. We haven’t been able to survey all the miles of trails yet, but its safe to say there are many more than 100 trees that have come down on the trails. In some places the trees have also damaged the tread. Most locations are passable by hikers but for now there are places where it would be difficult or impossible to get a bike through some of the tangled mass of branches and trees, and equestrians would not be able to get through at all.

Unfortunately BLM now has limited staff resources to help with this so we’re looking for volunteers to come out for a half day at a time to help swamp and clear debris off the trails. We are planning to go out with volunteer saw crews 2 or 3 days a week for the next several weeks and see how much we can get done to reopen the trails and repair as much damage as we can. If you’d like to help, email us at sutaoregoncontact@gmail.com to learn more about the tree-removal work parties.

We’ll be logging out as fast as we can, but please be patient. You can also make a donation to support this tree clearing and general trail upkeep effort. Your donation helps to pay for fuel and keep chainsaws and other equipment in good working order.

Meanwhile, please use the trails with caution. This recent winter storm is a reminder that high winds, wet soils, and dead or dying trees increase the risk of trees falling so check wind and weather conditions before heading out to your favorite trailhead.
